Dear Sir,

Coastguard Cottages & Rutherford Buildings, North Railway Street, Seaham

I am interested in the above around 1946.

Today I found a row of 5 houses on North Street opposite the Coastguard Station which a local gentleman of 77, told me were Coastguard Cottages.

I could not find Rutherford Buildings. Was it a block of flats? Demolished? Please do you have any old photos?

Thank you.

Sheila Seymour

Rutherfords Buildings must have been demolished a long time ago. I know where Hunters Buildings stood, at the eastern end of  South Railway Street.  I don’t know about Coastgaurd Cottages but there were Pilot Houses, could they be the same thing?  The Pilot Houses stood almost right on the cliff tops, just to the south of the docks.  By my calculations the single row of about 10-12 house stood facing the sea, where now Mary St; Aline St; and Robert St now stand, at the bottom end of Ropery Walk.

Does anybody have any photo's or further information? E-Mail Me

I am thoroughly enjoying the website and often check for updates but, alas, no "hits" on my previous request to track down any info/history on my parents & grandparents. I'll keep hoping. In the meantime, the next time you are out and about in the regions of Princess Rd/Grants Crescent and also the Vane Tempest Club, would it be possible to acquire the following two pics of the house I was born and lived in until I was 6 yrs old:

6 Grants Crescent,

Longitude , Latitude

(-1.3404715061187744, 54.83564219853843)

and also my grandparents downstairs council flat with the huge (or at least it seemed huge at the time) front garden that I used to tend with my grandad at:

73 Derwent Close

Longitude , Latitude

(-1.3461899757385254, 54.84012480895534)

This one taken from across the road on the path down from the Vane Tempest Club to Derwent Close should have the garden in the foreground, although I see from the aerial view map there is a huge tree in it now!!!!

One last request: Do you remember a VG grocery store on Princess Road in the early 70s? It was located on the east side of the street and I am guessing it would have been somewhere opposite the cemetery/Parkside Rd area? Just a wild stab in the dark.

Regards and thanks again for a great website (sir)

Gavin Cresswell (formerly Kirtley)

Gavin, I will attempt to get the photo’s you requested, in the meantime does anybody remember the shop that Gavin speaks of?  There were several shops along Princess Road, I have to say that one doesn’t ring any particular bells with me.  If you can remember the shop then E-Mail Me.

Gavin also requires assistance with his previous request click here to see it.

Hello,

Do you have a photo of California Street? My dad was born at 58, but I would hardly dare hope for a photo of that address. However, a street view would be nice.

Thanks

Carol Weaver

Carol, California Street has been requested previously. It doesn't exist anymore unfortunately but, there is a photo of it when it did exist and more info if you look at previous “The Crack” pages.

I’ve also found these photo’s of California Street taken during the redevelopment of the area in the late 1950’s to Early 1960’s.

I would love to see a picture of the Church School that used to be at the top of Church Street an any pictures of pupils ,I was there in 1945.

Noreen Watson

Noreen, this is the only 'illustration' I have, I do of course realise that its well before your time at the school. There is a supermarket that stands on the site now.

Noreen, after further searching I have found this photo of the school, looks like the 1970’s  It was opened in 1848, closed in 1973 and demolished in 1980.

What’s left of California Street with the new houses of Westlea in the background.

Mrs. Walkers shop California Street.  Demolished about 1960.

Hi,

My name is David Hogwood ( not the one who was in jail constantly ) I now live in Holland but from the ages of 8-9 until i was 18 and moved over here i lived in 44 Parkside crescent, if possible could you show my how the crescent is now ? especially the shops and the community centre, they hold a lot of memories for me. If you could do that for me I would very thankful. Thank you very much.

David Hogwood.

David, There are some pictures of the bottom end of Parkside Cres. already on the site. Here are some photo's of the area around the shops, the bottom of Heathway.

As you will see the old community centre is gone and a new old built in its place. The shops have had a bit of a facelift in recent times and the chapel opposite the shops is now a private house!

Hello,

My Grandmother was born in Seaham, living there until she was 30.

She turns 90 this year, and would dearly love to see a photo of her old Primary School from 1920 or thereabouts (the year she started school). My Grandmother’s school was Ropery Walk, I believe she would have started there as a pupil from 1921. If you do have anything, that would be great (I think I read somewhere else on the website that it was demolished in 1974?)

Kind regards

Heather

How about it? Does anybody have a photo of Ropery Walk Primary School, (the old school, that was demolished).

If so can you send me a copy please?  E-Mail Me

Hi

Just want to ask you what became of the "Castlereagh Hotel"? We were tenants at that pub for 2 years, our children went to school at Dene house. We heard the pub had been turned into a nursing home, is this true? Can we access any other places on the net to see "Old Seaham"?

It is 30 years since we were there 1976=1978, and we have such memories. Lovely to look at the changes.

Thanks

Jim & Ann Palmer

Jim and Ann, the Castlereagh Hotel became the Carlton Arms, then was closed down. It now houses a mini market in part of the downstairs anyway. The steel shutters cover the mini market part. Sadly the building is looking the worse for wear and the buildings next to it are failing down, hence the closed footpath.

Anybody know if there are any plans for these buildings? E-Mail Me

Hello

I was wondering if there was any chance you had any pictures of Adolphus Street West. My mum was born in number 22. I'd be very grateful if you had any of the house.

Evonne Moy

Hi, Evonne, as requested a picture of number 22 Adolphus Street West and one of more of the strret. Number 22 is the house second from the end.

My name is Jim and I was born at 37 Eastlea Cres in 1949 and attended at Deneside Public School until January 1961. I moved to Windermere Road Westlea when I was about 6 and from there moved to Australia in 1961. I have never returned to the UK although several other members of my family have.

I am interested in my house that we had prior to us leaving in 1961and I think it was number 12 Windermere Road Westlea although I cannot be sure.

Thanks in advance if you can do this.

Jim Donnelly

Adelaide, South Australia

Course I can Jim, this is Windemere Road today. Windemere Road is a long road which winds its way around the Westlea estate. I think the end house on the right in the first picture is No.12. The second picture is taken from the opposite end of the road, so No.12 is the last house on the left just as the road bends round.

I would love to see some photos of the old Ropery Walk primary school and buildings. I think it was demolished in about 1974 when we all moved across the playground into the new school - which I think is still there.

Thanks very much,

Jackie Walton.

A second request fro photo’s of Ropery Walk School. Does anybody have pictures of Ropery Walk or the school?  E-Mail Me.
